After six days in Tangier, I knew I needed a shift. What I didn’t expect was that Porto would be exactly what I was looking for.

From the first walk along the river, it clicked.

Porto felt balanced—modern but still deeply historic, layered without feeling heavy. It was warm and welcoming, but not in an overwhelming way. No hard sell. No chaos. Just a quiet confidence.

And the coffee…so good! The food? Amazing. I’m still thinking about it most mornings back in America.

In Porto, I felt lighter. I walked more. Shot more. It gave me space without feeling empty. Exactly what I needed. I will be back.

I spent five days in Porto and could’ve easily stayed longer. That alone says a lot.

My dad kept using the word “cozy.” He nailed it. Portugal is cozy.

Not small. Not sleepy. Just comfortable in its own skin. The kind of place where you settle in quickly—where the mornings feel unhurried, the streets feel lived-in, and nothing demands too much from you. Yet all the wonderful infrastructure and modern comforts were present to create a balance. It was a different energy. A good one.

The architecture in Porto pulled me in right away. The tiles. The aged facades. Buildings leaning into each other like they’ve been there forever—ornate but never loud. Even in the busiest areas, there was always a pocket of stillness

And somehow, it stayed calm. Tourists everywhere, but no chaos. Just a steady rhythm. I’d grab a strong coffee, sit for a while, no rush.

Braga felt different.

Quieter than Porto. Softer around the edges. The streets felt wider somehow, even when they weren’t. Churches everywhere

They say Braga is the soul of Portugal. I can see that.  There’s a depth to it.

Vila Verde was even more serene. A small town north of Braga, but still modern. Still comfortable. Nothing missing. The food was just as good. Vinho verde still cheap and somehow even more refreshing in that setting. Coffee strong.

It felt easy there. No friction. Just space to walk, sit, think. Cozy in the best way.
